Suburban Chic Photography Workshop a SUCCESS... super fun & delicious too!

The first Suburban Chic Photography workshop last month was a total success! We were full for the morning and evening sessions... and the smaller afternoon session got extra hands-on time with camera play! I have had a lot of feedback asking when we'll do it again, and I've also had inquiries about doing small groups, on-location, to really get into the nitty-gritty of getting capturing great images. If you have an interest in either one, let me know and we'll start getting the next date on the calendar!

Hey fans! SCP is now officially booked through June 2010... oh my, it's going to be a busy spring! As some of you know, my family and I head out of town for the month of July... yes, you can actually play OUTSIDE in the north during the summer months! Charm and a little bit of vintage flare is just a quick drive away from The Woodlands... and OH, was it worth the short drive! This adorable group of siblings brought their own guitar (cool) and we roamed the streets and alley ways... I kept telling them they needed to start a band since we captured their album cover at this session! And I swear tourists slowed as they passed us thinking this group of gorgeous kids was a legit music group in town!

'Tis that time of year....

...when there are 3 to 4 photographers lined up at all of the great locations in town, taking pictures of families and kids in all of their sassy getups... and it just feels so good! It means the holidays are just around the corner, and that we'll all be singing deck the halls in no time! It also means that it is no longer 105 degrees in Texas!

Hope Under the Stars....

Last spring I had the opportunity to photograph three of the cutest boys you ever did see. I posted a few favorites from their session in April.

Their gorgeous mama pulled up in a Hummer ... I add this part because, it is just so cool to see a mom-of-three driving a Hummer... and out stepped three boys clad in button-downs ready for a romp in the Bluebonnets. Unfortunately, it was raining, and we were seconds away from calling the whole thing off... everyone else at the park had run to their cars ... and just when we had the whole place to ourselves, the skies opened up and gave us a blue sky! Perhaps this session was just meant to be.

Sadly, just a few months after this photo shoot, this family received some devastating news. Their oldest son was diagnosed with a fatal, rare, genetic neurological-degenerative disorder called Juvenile Batten Disease.

You can read more about this little boy's story at http://www.willherndon.org/ But even better, for those of you local to The Woodlands, there is a fundraiser benefitting The Will Herndon Fund for Juvenile Batten Research. Hope Under the Stars... Please come along for an evening of dinner, dancing and HOPE at the Creekside Pavilion.

All proceeds from this event will help fund the most promising research to find a cure for Juvenile Batten Disease... right now there isn't one.

One look in this little boy's eyes, and you'll be buying tickets. Hope and prayers go a long way.... so say a few for this family tonight, won't you :)

I just love it when I get an image that is the perfect depiction of a relationship... and this first picture of three siblings has made me giggle out loud!

It was hot out... I was sweating, they're cute mama was sweating, and these kids were just having a ball while we did all the work running around them!

The baby crawls away, the little boy wonders just how silly we really are, and the sweet big sister just offers up another hug... oh, can't you just read the story line? Ha!

However, it should be said that these adorable kids took some beautiful pictures on that 100 degree afternoon! Is it winter in Texas yet?

You know, so often people think that the perfect smile is what makes a photograph... I beg to differ! Kids are even more wonderful when they are unposed and showing even the less smiley aspects of their personalities! As a mom myself, I love the pouts, the tears and even the scowls between siblings... those moments (yes, along with smiles and giggles too) are part of what childhood is all about! So let's hear it for a pretty pout!

I just know it's going to be a great photo session when the family I'm about to photograph says, "Sure, we'll follow you into those tall weeds over there on the side of the road out here in the middle of no where!" And sure enough, it was a great shoot, full of family lovin' and laughing. In fact, perhaps you recognize one of these sisters from an earlier post... the ice skating high school senior. She leaves for college tomorrow and I have a feeling that her mama's heart is right out there on her sleeve! I'm glad I have some more time before I'm in her shoes... Sending my oldest to Kindergarten last year was hard enough!

Oh, I love a good costume... mix it with a little bit of magic, a sunny day and a few good hugs for your big brother.... Well, that's just a perfect afternoon! This little angel and her big brother were an absolute joy.... smiling, giggling and dancing up and down the sidewalks.... that's enough to make me believe in fairies. How about you? Perhaps if you could try on the wings? :)

We've heard it before... the little flaws and imperfections are what make us beautiful... but it's true! And it is especially true with kids! I absolutely love the little reminders that kids are kids, and most delightful when we let them show it!

I met these adorable boys last fall, and they were just as fun to work with this summer! Not to mention, their mama has become a favorite client... just look how much fun this lady is! The cutest part was that one of them had a left-over rub-on tattoo on his hand, and when we went to print I had to ask... and as if she knew it was coming, the mom said, "Don't Photoshop the tattoo out! I love it!" And I just had to agree! Now I need to remember this when my own daughter wants a giant Little Mermaid tattoo on her arm for her own school pictures!

Do good. Get it done.

It is absolutely an honor to know Paige Davis, founder and Chief Inspiration Officer for Blue Avocado. And to do a few head shots for her, was far beyond a pleasure for me... that isn't just because we sampled a round or two of martinis afterwards! More so because she's been a dear friend for more than 14 years. "It takes a long time to grow an old friend." :)

Suburban Chic Photography up and left the Texas heat for the heart of the summer... and we are now cherishing the memories made as we count down the days till school starts and the leaves turn.

We're relishing the little things .... the family time & celebrations, flip flops & swimsuits, popcicles & sweet corn, boat rides & motorcycle adventures, and best of all no bed times! Below is a little taste of what my camera saw this summer, chasing around my own family.

But even as delicious as summer is, the coming of autumn and the fast-paced busy season have me just as giddy! Let's roll!

Hardly an imp, and oh, so cute!! Barely walking and just past his first birthday, this little man and his car were adorable! But best of all, the contrast of beautiful communion attire, and the roughness of a made-with-love race car made for the perfect portrait! VROOOOOOOM!

This wonderful family leaves Texas this summer, and is onto a new adventure which will lead them home to Holland. They wanted summery images by the pool, as life in Holland won't be quite as warm :) So to top off the fun that evening, I asked the couple to sneak in a "smooch".... and it was then that my friend looked at me with the most inquisitive eyes, wondering what in the world I had just asked her to do in front of her children! ha! I guess "smooch" isn't high on the American English vocabulary lists! But smooched they did and their kids basked in the love of the evening too. Safe and happy travels to them.... The Woodlands will be left with a heavy heart when they are gone :)

This adorable little girl picked and smelled each flower we walked by, and even cuter, she kept and cherished each special bloom in her hand. But what was even more perfect is that the flowers she chose all matched perfectly with her outfit! I couldn't have dreamed up a better prop myself! And while her baby sister sat and wondered about it all with a bit of skepticism at first, by the end, she smiled in spite of herself!!

Here's to the Earth's giggles and those of little girls' too! Both of them contagious in spirit!

This lucky grandma got hugs and kisses from both sets of her grandkids on this gorgeous sunny evening. And just to make sure all ran smoothly, the mamas packed a little adult picnic :) Needless to say, vino or no vino, this happy grandma had plenty to smile about .... how could you not with this adorable group of kiddos fighting for your lap?

I have had the heart warming opportunity to photograph a couple sets of grandparents as of late, and wow.... do grandkids have it good! This little man wore an Easter suit his grandma gave him; one that matches one worn by his granddad years long past. And he romped all over the park smiling the entire time... his precious personality and the power nap in the car ensured that! After all was said and done, I don't know who had the most fun that night.... the grandparents, that doted on grandson, or me!

This is my second time working with these adorable kids -- and again, they have had me in stitches with their wonderfully spirited expressions! (Check them out in "the log" in my portfolio and tell me you don't giggle out loud!) They laugh, stick their tongues out, pout, and do up the brother/sister role in the cutest fashion ever!

This time around, I was lucky enough to get mom and dad in the photos as well.... and not only would I grant this fun family "best expressions"... but they'd be up there with "most beautiful" too!

This senior was awesome to work with -- an athlete, yet graceful and gorgeous. She's an ice skater, and from what I gather, a really good one. So we did a series of her in her regular work out gear, with her new skates... shiney blades and all. And I couldn't help being reminded of those Nike ad campaigns that celebrate women and all their glory.

Here's one I found, and for a graduating senior on her way out into the world, it couldn't be more fitting. Go girl :)

So, given the fact that I have two young kids of my own, I am aware of a few simple words that elicit a giggle... and these two cuties were no exception! They laughed hysterically while I, Ms. Jamie, recited the word "butt" over and over again... (oh yes, I apologized to the parents as I visualized notes home from the preschool telling of inappropriate use of language in the classroom!) In fact, when it was all said and done, we were all giggling...at the word, each other and the plain silliness of it all! Butt.... who knew? :) I bet you did!

We jumped from Bluebonnets to a good ole fashioned family photo shoot for this adorable foursome! And yes, I myself have marveled over and over about how this little girl's eyes match the brilliant blue of the Texas state flower! Beautiful! But what was even cuter, was watching her little brother (almost 2) try to get away from her hugs and kisses :)

Seniors are a blast to work with... and after working with so many little kids, I find myself simply amazed that they sit still and take direction with ease and interest :) Not to mention, it' s fun to see them on their way to a new adventure... sheepish grins, knowing smirks and a quiet confidence. Oh, the places they'll go!

This senior was all boy: tough but gentlemanly and polite, rugged, athletic and king of the soft spot in his mama's heart.

Ok admittedly, I've been a terrible blogger! I have a list of favorite photos ready to post, and instead of working into the wee hours, I've chosen early nights tucked in with my kiddos and Dr. Seuss :) So, here we go with some serious posting! (Check back daily, as SCP has been booked solid for the last two months, and is full now through June! No wonder I'm easily led to dreamland at night!)

I've smiled time and time again, thinking about how fun my job is... but every now and then you take photographs of a family who make it more than just fun... down right hilarious, in fact! Strike a pose, people! Life is too important to be taken so seriously!

Sisters, mothers, grandmother (and a new nephew/son/grandson) .... I marvel at all of the roles women play, and this group was a beautiful sample of them all. Not to mention, they were absolutely in love with this new little man in their lives! And he loved every minute of the attention... just not the 48 degree weather! His quivering bottom lip had us all ooooh-ing and ahhh-ing.

On a chilly afternoon, this beautiful family braved the cold -- NO JOKE! And they smiled right through the 42 degree temps. Growing up in Wyoming, I know it's all relative, but on a day I can't wear flip flops, it's considered winter down here! They brought along their new puppy who licked and grinned the whole time... and truth be told, a cold day does make for better snuggles!

I absolutely cannot believe that it's already the middle of February and only a couple days before Valentine's Day! The holidays had Suburban Chic Photography running mad, and we wouldn't have had it any other way! We loved spreading holiday joy through the many cards we made for customers, and it's continued now into the new year with new born sessions, valentines and fun events! (Photos of all to be posted shortly, of course!)

As of now, we are completely booked for the Texas Bluebonnet season and booked solid throughout the month of April, but we have a waiting list started -- Spring fever is approaching!

And so in the spirit of love, meet my hubby.... a scientist/engineer at heart... even he can't argue with Albert Einstein :)

A few thoughts on this Thanksgiving morning...

"Some people come into our lives and quickly go. Some stay for awhile, leave footprints on our hearts, and we are never, ever the same."

I photograph beautiful families all the time, each with their own unique memory in my mind... and then I continue on in my work, adding to the client list, filling new appointments and cherishing an image or two from each of those sessions as they become a piece in my portfolio.

However this spring, I had the opportunity to meet a beautiful family who did more than leave just a memory and who did more than add to my portfolio; they left a footprint on my heart and I will never, ever be the same.

Their beauty wasn't just that they were pretty to look at; their beauty ran far deeper than picture perfect smiles. They loved and laughed out loud that afternoon, and they played and showered each other with affection -- which would make ANY photographer's job easy! And the following day, the mother went in for treatment to fight the cancerous tumor that would eventually take her life.

I knew this when I arrived, and not knowing what to expect (and tearing up at least 4 times on the drive to their home), I was completely distracted from the issue because they were so enthusiastic, so happy, and so full of LIFE, that I couldn't possibly feel sorrow. And as I drove away that Sunday afternoon, I was angry at the world and its unfairness, that a family that in love with each other would have such an impossible battle on their hands. That was May 5th.

In July while on vacation with my own family, I received a call that Stephanie Johnson had passed away. I hung up and cried. I had only met this woman once. I had only played with her family for two hours. And yet, I was totally taken by emotion. My lab rushed prints to them for the memorial service, and I burned CDs and shipped them immediately... anything to help ease the heartache, to send love to that beautiful family.

I received countless thanks for those pictures... from friends and her family too, and I cried each time I received them. And then I realized... Photography is not just a job. It's not just an art. Even more grand, it has the ability to give memories and moments to people that will last forever.

Thank you Johnson family. I am so very thankful for your footprint.

One of the greatest parts about working with families, is that I'm reminded at every shoot how we parents are so very similar in so many ways.... loving, playing, bickering, bribing, frustrated, in love, and wanting the very most for our kids... (and hoping that booger can be "photo-shopped" if possible? Of course! :) It's reassuring and comforting too, to know that we're not alone on this crazy roller coaster called parenthood.

Ok, I just might be talked into that 3rd baby after all!

Oh, the trials and tribulations of parenthood :) And it's oh, so worth it :) I am so in love with this first image... and as I explained to the client, it would have been even more classic if she were licking her finger and rubbing dirt from his cheek! This family is so much fun to work with... sibling rivalry and giggles, rip sticks and sports equipment, and genuine comedy! Have I mentioned lately how much I love my job?

This friend and recent client is only days away from meeting her new baby girl, and we barely beat Hurricane Ike to the photo session! The bump was truly the star of this shoot, and the fun artsy ideas this family had made this session a delightfully creative experience!

This family giggled their way through a beautifully lit photo session as the sun went down in East Shore. Even though it was close to 8pm, bedtime was a far off thought since playing with Mom and Dad in the tall grasses was much more fun than headed home for PJs!

That's what these cute girls are made of! A beautiful morning and a mom's promise of french toast had this set of sisters smiling ear to ear! Needless to say, their daddy will be mighty busy guarding the door when they get older!

This spring, Suburban Chic Photography donated a sitting (and some other fun goodies!) to the Interfaith Child Development Center parent-led auction. The Sakellakis family came in with the winning bid -- and last weekend lent their smiles to SCP. Even in the thick of the Texas humidity (so brave, indeed!), they laughed, played and garnered some beautiful images.... here are a few of my favorites!
